On December 10, the Buffalo County Partnership Council held its yearly 10th Grade Day at Mondovi High School. Alma, Mondovi, and Gilmanton School Districts all attended this presentation where the tenth-grade students learned about distracted driving and dating violence prevention.
Tom Goeltz, the presenter on distracted driving, shared his heartbreaking story of the loss of his daughter. Mr. Goeltz’s daughter was hit by a distracted driver which resulted in her death in 2016. The tenth-graders listened to Mr. Goletz explain many of the statistics based on distracted driving accidents. One of these statistics was that 1.5 million people die per year worldwide due to distracted driving accidents. The students were also shown multiple videos based on other people’s stories of causing or being involved in distracted driving accidents. At the end of the presentation, the students were gifted bracelets and a phone slip to use while driving to help prevent using phones while driving.
Presenter, Steph Page taught the students about dating violence prevention. Steph is a part of the non-profit Stories Foundation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Steph’s presentation focused on human trafficking and how to prevent it. The students were spoken to about different types of relationships including, relationships with themselves, relationships with others, and relationships with the community. Steph Page ended her presentation by handing out bracelets that say, “Your story matters”. This quote is a main focus of the Stories Foundation.
