The Alma Area School's Jazz and Polka Bands had an outstanding performance at their annual Big Band Dance. Both bands are entirely voluntary and non-graded, giving students an extra chance to showcase their musical talents. A quote from Tori Creighton sums this up perfectly, “It's truly inspiring to see so many students volunteer their time, talent, and energy to create such a memorable event.”

Rehearsals for the concert began in mid-January, giving students just a short month to master their music before performing in mid-February. Despite the tight timeline, the musicians pulled it off effortlessly. The evening kicked off with an impressive Jazz Band set filled with numerous solos. Following that, the Polka Band took the stage with a lively mix of polkas and waltzes.

One of the highlights of the night was a performance of Elvis Presley’s, "I Can’t Help Falling in Love," performed by senior soloists Mya Stewart, Allidah Luff, Hailee McQuistion, and Chloe Reed. The song was a perfect slow dance opportunity for all of the couples in attendance, especially considering the concert was held just one day after Valentine’s Day. The Polka Band also featured a rendition of the Tennessee Walz performed by Nessa Noll, Finley Noll, Madalyn Wick, Chloe Reed, and Isabella Olson. The young ladies who stepped forward to perform these two romantic ballads truly put on an amazing show.

Many of the fans in attendance could be seen enjoying the music, and even taking to the dance floor. This was especially true for the final song played by the band, the Chicken Dance. This has always been a fan favorite. Another favorite is the tradition of hosting a cakewalk. Students in the band bring dozens of treats to donate to the cakewalk. This is a tradition where attendees pay $1 per chance to walk in a circle and get their number called to win a treat of their choice. Not only is this a method for the band to fundraise, but more importantly, it is something that all attendees enjoy greatly! You can spot a lone curling around the gym just to secure a spot in the treat walk. The Big Band Dance, a cherished tradition spanning many years, has once again dazzled the audience with director Joan Draxler Ruff adding another performance to her legacy.
