Heavenly Hats Comes to Alma High School
The Alma School students were given the opportunity to partake in a good cause. On Friday, October 6th, students could donate $1.00 and wear a hat during school. The donation wasn’t going to the school but to the Heavenly Hats Foundation. Alma School has a dress code against wearing hats during school hours, but for one day they could donate to a good cause and wear their favorite hat. This year, the Alma School had $171.00 donated to the Heavenly Hats Foundation.
The Heavenly Hats Foundation is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2001 by a ten-year-old named Anthony Leanna. Anthony lived in Green Bay at the time when his grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer. Anthony decided to go out to local businesses and put a hat donation box out. He would collect the hats and deliver them to local hospitals. He didn’t think anything significant would have come of this, but that’s not how it ended. Anthony’s caring heart found him in interviews with national news outlets. This was Anthony’s dream, but this led his mom, DeeAnn, to make a hard decision. DeeAnn left her job and learned the non-profit sector, so Anthony’s dream could come true. Anthony’s idea was with all the hardship the patients are enduring, why should they pay anywhere from $10-$100 for hats? Anyone who requests a “hat package” will get 6-7 brand-new hats free of charge. Heavenly Hats will send hats to patients of all ages; however, the children will receive a stuffed animal or a toy in their box. Nearly 23 years later and with countless volunteers, the Heavenly Hats Foundation has donated over 5,400,000 brand-new hats to cancer patients in need. All of this wouldn’t be possible without the donations from the community.
Mrs. Baab's 3rd grade class had a blast during their Friday morning Array Bakery! These bakers put their multiplication and division skills to work and even got to create a tasty treat to enjoy!
We didn't have time for Wacky Wednesday in school this week so we had Freaky Friday instead! To kick off the month of October, we applied pressure to a pumpkin using rubber bands! It took 247 rubber bands before our explosion (hopefully the video works)! We counted and kept track with 10 sticks and bundled each 100. This experiment was a blast!

Pepin Homecoming Volleyball Game
On Tuesday, October 3rd, the Alma-Pepin Eagles volleyball team faced the Augusta Beavers for another conference matchup. With the Eagles only having one game the week prior, they were ready to start putting all their work from practice into a game. Alma-Pepin came out strong in the first set with 4 aces and 9 kills. The Eagles won the set 25-16. Confident after their first set win, the Eagles came out even stronger for the second, dominating the set with 7 aces and 9 kills. Going into the third set, the Eagles were ready to send Augusta home early on their homecoming night however, the Beavers weren’t quite ready to give up yet. Augusta came out and took control of the third set with a score of 25-16. The Eagles were fixated on winning the fourth set. Serving was definitely the Eagles strong suit of the night as they had 8 aces in the fourth match. They quickly ended the game with the score in the fourth set being 25-13. The Teamwork was definitely evident as the Eagles’ stats were widely spread between players. Three different Eagle athletes all had 7 kills for the night, while Tori Creighton had 8 aces in total.
Thursday October 5th, was a big night for both the Alma-Pepin Eagles and the Independence-Gilmanton Indees. The Indees were celebrating their homecoming and their “Tip it for Teresa'' fundraiser honoring Barb Hang. She just recently rang the bell after finishing her sixth round of chemo. Alma-Pepin had a rocky start to the game. They had to quickly adjust to the scrappy plays that Independence made. The final of the first set was 25-20 with Alma-Pepin on top. The Eagle’s defense had an outstanding game. Two of their athletes recorded double digits for digs, while multiple others were very close behind. Alma-Pepin came out dominant in the second set, winning 25-16. Independence-Gilmanton, relying abundantly on their underclassmen, had 21 digs by Sophomore Kylynn Kennedy. The Eagle’s middles had to work hard around Independence's big block from their freshmen players, Nora Schank and Shauna Dejno. The third set was a battle for the Eagles. Independence wasn’t going to give up easily. The Eagles finally took the game winning the third set 25-24. Next week the Eagles have two conference games against Whitehall and Melrose-Mindoro.

*Student Council will be hosting a Hat Day Fundraiser to support the Heavenly Hats Foundation. Students donating a dollar can wear a hat for the day. The Heavenly Hats Foundation was established in 2001 by a 10-year old boy from Green Bay who started collecting hats after his Grandma was diagnosed with cancer. I have attached the full story if you would like to read more about it.
9-12 Student Council students will be collecting money at the 7-12 entrance on Friday morning and will visit elementary classrooms to collect money within the first 15 minutes of the day.
Last year our school raised $184, let's see if we can hit $200 this year!

Meet Brynn Midtovne, an eighth grader who is all about being kind and friendly. Brynn has a loving family- her older brother Liam is a sophomore, along with her younger sister, Mischa, who is a fourth grader. Brynn’s biggest role model is her mom Rachel. Brynn looks up to her mom and the great things she does for her.
Brynn loves being at Alma because it’s a nice place with friendly people. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Baab, who taught her back in third grade. She also has two furry friends, Thor the dog, and Loki, the cat, who both make her days extra special. We are proud to call Brynn our student of the week.

Pepin-Alma Wins Another in Dominant Fashion

Melrose- American poet, Henry Longfellow warned of a potential British Invasion in 1775 by using the famous saying, ‘One By Land, Two by Sea.’ Pepin-Alma’s senior captain Madox Stewart may have been giving the ‘One By Land, Two by AIR' sign in Merosel-Mindoro on Friday night. Stewart, the 6’0 202 lb quarterback, and linebacker seemed to have his hand in nearly every important play on both sides of the ball and special teams, as the Eagles cruised to another running clock victory 43 to 6 over the Mustangs.
Stewart completed 7 of 10 passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns. He ran in a two-point conversion himself and also recorded 17 tackles to lead a stingy Pepin-Alma defense in the convincing win.
Melrose-Mindoro entered the contest with a 3-1 conference record, and they did their best to keep the Eagles offense off the field most of the night. The Mustangs used every bit of the play clock and utilized 6’3, 240-pound utility player Brayden Lockington in multiple positions. The hometown Mustangs were able to limit possessions the game, but it didn’t slow down one of the state’s most prolific offenses when they did get the ball.
The Eagles took an opening quarter lead when Demetrius Bergmann found the endzone zone from 35 yards out. Jack Riesgraf added the two-point conversion for the Eagles’ only score in the initial frame. The Eagles added to the lead in the second quarter, and again it was Bergmann the beneficiary of some great blocking. This score was from 4 yards. The lead stretched 22-0 following an 8-play drive, that ended with a 2-yard scoring toss from Stewart to fellow senior Evan Olson. Melrose Mindoro drove to the Pepin in Alma 30-yard line on their final drive of the half, but Dylan Roundy broke up a pass on fourth down with less than 30 seconds, remaining in the half. The Eagles were not content to run the clock out. Stewart found Olson down the right side line for a gain of 22 and Bergmann ripped off an inside run of 19 yards setting the Eagles up for one last play from the Melrose-Mindoro 25. With the defense geared to stop the speedy Olson, Stewart found Cainnin Mann with a step on a defender and threw a 25-yard laser down the left hash. Mann snared the pass and reached across the goal line for a touchdown with a single tick remaining on the first-half clock to push the lead to 28-0.
Melrose Mindoro stuck to their game plan and went on a 13-play, nine-minute drive to open the second half. Lockington was used mostly as a lead blocker and speedy running back Jackson Blaken found a few creases in the Eagle defense. Lockington slipped into the right side endzone for a 5-yard scoring strike on 4th and goal, to cut the Pepin-Alma lead to 28 to 6.

Big Strides for Alma-Pepin Athletics

In the last few years, Alma-Pepin has had the opportunity to co-op with other schools to add a wider variety of activities for their students. The most recent sport added to Alma-Pepin athletics is cross country. The cross country team is based out of the Wabasha-Kellogg High School in Minnesota and includes students from Alma and Pepin. This adds a wider variety of opportunities to the students from both schools. Going to Alma has a small school feel, but not small school opportunities. Administrators at Alma and Pepin look to not only provide an excellent learning environment, but they also look to expand the interests of the students. This co-op grants opportunities to students who may lack interest in traditional fall sports and in general, gives more variety to the students from both Alma and Pepin. Overall, we can hope to see more growth in the future not just for the current students, but for those who will succeed in the future.
The Students from Alma and Pepin have been taking this opportunity by storm. Cole Arens, a Pepin athlete, has done very well in the most recent cross country meet. This meet took place on September 19 at Hok-Si-La Park. This was the Lake City Invitational and was split up into girls and boys varsity. Each person had to run 5,000 meters which is a little more than three miles. The Wabasha-Kellogg team placed 8th at the event, but Cole Arens took home a big win on his own. Cole ran the 5,000 meter race in 16 minutes and 8.81 seconds, 26 seconds in front of the 2nd place runner. He ended up taking home the first place medal. Not only did Cole place first in this meet, but he hit his personal record (16:08.81). After this most recent P.R., Cole is on the 2023 leaderboard. Out of all the runners in the state of Minnesota, Cole has placed 40th in the state for the 2023 fall season. Our other runners are increasing their records and endurance day by day. All four of the Alma and Pepin cross country runners are also a part of the track team, and this co-op opportunity will further help them in the spring. We would like to give a big thank you to the athletic directors and administrators for making this opportunity possible for the students of Alma and Pepin.
Heavenly Hats
A select few of Alma-Pepin's student-athletes were given the opportunity to attend an officiating camp at Augusta High School. With this training, students will be eligible to be certified to referee high school basketball games. The kids at the camp learned how to make calls and how to use the right hand and arm signals. They discovered that the best way to make a call is to have confidence in their voice and whistle. They got to meet many new people at the clinic. The schools that attended were, Melrose-Mindoro, Alma Center-Lincoln, Augusta, Independence-Gilmanton, Whitehall, Eleva-Strum, and Alma-Pepin. The clinic lasted around three hours long and was full of lots of useful information.
